For more than 20 years, BNP Paribas has been involved in a special partnership with European cinema. We are really excited about Valerian as it is a very bold project and its trajectory will propel us into the future. This great initiative is a perfect fit with BNP Paribas' commitment to support the creative industries and entrepreneurs in their major international ambitions.
Valerian is the biggest film of my life. I naturally turned to BNP Paribas, a reliable and dedicated partner. They understand the challenges of the film industry and have been bold enough to support me in this ambitious project. I am hoping, above all, to open the doors of my universe to the widest possible audience. I found set designers through open source competitions - the new way of working that BNP Paribas knows very well!
VALeRIAN, the film
The film is essentially based on the volume The Ambassador of the Shadows. Valerian and Laureline, acult comic book from the late ’60s, was written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mézières. This film marks the director’s return to space opera, 20 years after "The Fifth Element", which confirms his liking for this genre of science fiction.
The year is 2740. Valerian and Laureline are galaxy-hopping federal agents who speed through time and space aboard their spaceship, the Intruder, to intrepidly accomplish their missions. Their latest assignment takes them to the Alpha space station, with its 17 million inhabitants from all four corners of the universe. On Alpha, nearly 8,000 different species pool their knowledge and resources, technology and talents.
