August 2010
A Country where more than One hundred and Seventy nationalities live side by side…
Known as the “Green Heart of Europe”, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg occupies a unique position among the member states of the European Union. Its most notable features are undoubtedly the diversity of its population and the high degree of integration into Luxembourg society.
Nearly 44% of the Grand Duchy’s population is of foreign origin. Among the most heavily represented foreign communities in Luxembourg are the Portuguese, French, Italians, Belgians and Germans. Despite the very high proportion of foreign residents, the Grand Duchy has no cultural tensions to speak of. This is one of the key characteristics of the Luxembourgish integration model.
… In a country that is largely open to foreigners…
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg’s unusual demographics have had an impact on the labour market. Foreign workers make up more than 69.5% of the active labour force. This is partly the result of immigration (foreign residents), supplemented by a high proportion of cross-border workers.

Interview story
Jean-Paul Schmitz: Customer advisor with the Affluent Residents and Independent Professionals Pool.
Hello, Jean-Paul. What is your professional background?
I took my first steps in the professional world in September 2005, as part of BGL BNP Paribas’s Human Resources department. I was hired as a new graduate, and during the first few months I was given projects that enabled me to learn about the various careers available in banking and about the philosophy of our Human Resources team.
Following the creation of the “Recruitment and Communications” entity at the end of 2006, my responsibilities became more wide ranging: organizing and participating in career forums, hiring interviews and managing the Traineeship programme (now known as the “Associates” programme).
Why did you choose to change jobs within the bank?
In working in the bank, we have an opportunity to evolve and develop in different fields. I've always been aware of this opportunity, and so I decided to leave Human Resources to join a branch within the banking network.
Why did you choose Retail Banking?
Because I wanted to diversify my skills by gaining experience in a field where relationships play an important role and where results are practical and measurable. I also wanted to make greater use of my analytical skills, to be in touch with the financial markets and to able to approach customers proactively.
What were the different steps in your transfer?
I notified my boss that I wanted an internal transfer, and I received a positive response at the end of 2008. My HR manager, the training department and the Marketing and Sales Organisation department quickly set me up with a training program that had been specifically developed for employees with prior banking experience.
This training program, which is taught by specialists from within our bank, is very intensive, very informative and covers a maximum amount of topics related to working in Retail Banking in a minimum amount of time! Those of you who are looking for a new challenge would really enjoy it!
In mid-January 2009, I joined the “Affluent Residents and Independent Professionals” pool. The first months are seldom the easiest ones in a new role: I asked my colleagues a lot of questions and I had to accept that I couldn’t learn everything at once. Of course, my priorities are set according to the needs of our customers, who in this pool are mostly doctors, lawyers, architects, etc. Learning huge amounts every day while trying to satisfy customers is very stimulating!
The bank also makes a lot of tools available to us (see the various marketing campaigns) so that we can ensure that we provide our customers with the best possible service.
My on-the-job training continues every day, and we also have the opportunity to sign up for courses offered by the bank or by the Institut de Formation Bancaire (IFBL – the Bank Training Institute).
Knowing what you know now, would you do it all again?
YES, absolutely! I really appreciate this opportunity to develop my career, not just on a technical level but also from a personal perspective. I love being in contact with lots of people, whether with customers or with colleagues in different departments of the bank.
My job requires a wide range of skills: first of all, to be able to understand and present a product, but also to be able to approach a potential customer and to adapt our marketing pitch to their level of knowledge and their personality. Not to mention the analytical skills necessary to study a balance sheet or a customer’s financial situation.
And finally, what’s in it for you?
It’s a dynamic and motivating job that’s giving me a wide range of opportunities for the future. I want to emphasise this point because the branch network genuinely provides many opportunities for job mobility and career development. Talk with colleagues that you may know in the Retail Bank, or contact me - I'll be happy to give you advice to help you make your decision!
